Important Dates: Tuesday Sept 29: - Swimming - student who do not swim complete an assignment to replace their participation mark - Free Youth Theatre Class - Arabella Country Club - Anyone from 13-18 years is welcome - great for public speaking and boosting confidence (this is the company that students will be working with later in the year as part of their drama curriculum) - First book order of the year distributed to students Wednesday Sept 30 - Colour House Kickoff Assembly Reminders: Homework: On our class website (www.cisegrade8.weebly.com) you will find a link that you can use to sign up for our class homework reminder messaging system. You can join the group using a code when you download the Remind App (send me an email and I will send you the class code) or you can enter your email by clicking on the link found on the homework page. This is a quick messaging system that allows the students to receive reminders from me each night of what the homework is, what the schedule is for the following day, as well as any other reminders that will help them be prepared for school. What’s Happening in Class: Literacy - students complete a writing activity each morning; every day except for Wednesday students are reading independently in class (books from library or from home). Each Thursday the students work with Ms. Margaret’s Grade 1 class; currently the focus is buddy reading. Students this week will be focusing on reviewing the different reading strategies that we use to understand what we read. This will lead into the students reviewing the different types of writing and how to respond to questions effectively. Math - students completed a reflection on the first unit of study which focused on problem solving and working in groups. Our next unit of study is learning about integers and algebraic expressions. Students will review how to add and subtract integers and solve problems involving integers. They will also begin to learn how to multiply integers. Science - students have been introduced to the expectations for how they are to behave while in the science lab. They will be starting into their study of water systems by looking at the water cycle above ground, the water cycle below ground, and how runoff occurs on the land surfaces. Geography - Students are learning about patterns in human geography. The focus this week was on the patterns that each student has made in the world. Students completed a map and must complete some reflection questions about the patterns they see on their maps. Physical Education - Students have been focusing on understanding the components of fitness and swimming. Any students who do not participate in the swimming classes must complete a swimming related assignment in order to receive a mark for the class (this replaces their participation mark). Health - The focus in the first unit is on making healthy food choices. The students have learned about the different types of nutrients that we get in our diets and will be analyzing fast food menus for their nutrition value. Students were expected to complete an activity where they were to record the different foods they were consuming over the break and classify them into the 4 food groups as indicated by Canada’s Food Guide. Drama - students continue to focus on learning various warm-ups and games that introduce them to the different elements of drama. Dance - students have been working on a project where they are researching different aspects of a dance genre. Students have chosen to do the assignment either on their own, in pairs, or groups of 3-4. These assignments will be due in 2 weeks. Arabic - the Arabic department provides the students with a schedule for each week of what they should be completing for homework. This is posted in the class and will be posted on the Arabic page on our class website each week. As always, if there are any questions or concerns about what is happening in our class please do not hesitate to contact me at the school, send a note with your child, or send an email. Have a great week! |
