Hello Everyone,
Below you will find important reminders and dates followed by an update on what the students are learning this week.
Important Dates:
Monday October 19 - WellSpring Forms and Payment Due
Tuesday October 20 - Swimming (8:15)
November 15, 16, 17:
- WellSpring Overnight Field Trip
Reminders:
PE Uniforms: The new coaches that are teaching the grade 8 students have requested that students be showing up for PE with their proper PE uniform (CISE PE shirt, CISE PE shorts, and running shoes). Students should be bringing a water bottle to class as well for hydration. The PE shirt and shorts can be from previous years if you have not been able to purchase the new PE shirt and shorts from the school. Some students are making the choice to show up for PE with their jeans and polo shirt - this means they workout, sweat, then come back to class and sit in their sweaty clothing for the remainder of the day. This is not very hygienic so it would be helpful if you can remind your child to bring their proper uniform so they can change. Students who are not prepared for class are currently losing marks on their participation because they are not able to participate properly while wearing jeans.
Homework:
On our class website (www.cisegrade8.weebly.com) you will find a link that you can use to sign up for our class homework reminder messaging system. You can join the group using a code when you download the Remind App (class code: grade8ea1) or you can enter your email by clicking on the link found on the homework page. This is a quick messaging system that allows the students to receive reminders from me each night of what the homework is, what the schedule is for the following day, as well as any other reminders that will help them be prepared for school.
What’s Happening in Class:
Literacy - Students will complete a diagnostic writing assessment to determine what level they are at in writing narrative text. Students will also begin a reading focus where they will apply the Making Connections reading strategy to help them understand texts read in class.
Math - Students will practice using the rules for multiplying integers by “going shopping” at our 8EA store. They will also learn how to divide integers, solve problems involving the division of integers, and apply the order of operation rules to expressions involving integers.
Science - students will complete lab experiments this week that will help them understand the water cycle above ground, the water cycle below ground, and how run-off occurs on land surfaces.
Geography - Students will learn about where communities locate and the factors that affect where people choose to settle (site and situation).
Physical Education - Students have been focusing on understanding the components of fitness and swimming. We have started our classes with the PE coaches who have been hired by the school to help with the program. During these classes I am participating with the students so I am still able to provided individual support as well as properly assess the students for their skills and participation. Students will be swimming this Tuesday.
Health - Students will be analyzing fast food menus for their nutrition value.
Drama - students continue to focus on learning various warm-ups and games that introduce them to the different elements of drama. We will specifically identify the elements of drama this week and look at which warm-ups have helped us practice each of these.
Dance - students have been working on a project where they are researching different aspects of a dance genre. Students will be presenting their “demonstrate or teach their dance genre” part of their assignments in class this week. The written parts of the assignment are due next week.
Arabic - the Arabic department provides the students with a schedule for each week of what they should be completing for homework.
As always, if there are any questions or concerns about what is happening in ourclass please do not hesitate to contact me at the school, send a note with your child, or send an email.
Have a great week!
Ms. Lindsay
